2017 Metrics and Winter Half at Hamptons Training Week 1

As you may know, I’m an engineer.  So I love to have quantifyable metrics with which to compare my year end results.  As I review my numbers I have to be congesant that I did spend a lot of 2017 recovering from ankle surgery and moping around (because if I couldn’t run I didn’t want to do anything :-D).

Not reflected in metrics is the time I spent doing Yoga, Barre, going to TRX or walking if I wasn’t tracking the mileage.  I’m also not perfect at actually making sure I get the mileage recorded on Strava if it wasn’t logged via watch or application.


608 miles  – By far the least I have run in years.  The heatmap tells the story.


1036mi – mostly indoors

of those miles 453 were on an Expresso Bike with many challenges completed along the way.


19,441 yd (~11 miles) – It just isn’t a training focus this year.

Indoor Rowing

671,661m (671km or 417 miles) – The Concept2 Season for the rowing machine doesn’t follow the calendar year.  Their new Season starts in May.


Winter Half at Hampton Week #1

Training for my next attempat at a Half Marathon started Christmas day.  The Winter Half at Hampton is one of my favorite races.  It was my first half marathon in 2010.  It was also my standing Personal Record on the Half Marathon distance for 6 years.

I won’t be chasing a PR this time.  I only want to finish the distance again after running nothing longer than 7.5 miles in 2017.

Because my goals are modest, and I’m trying to make sure my ankle handles the distance, I’m doing a pretty light training schedule.

Monday December 25, 2017 –

  • 5 miles running outdoors 12:31/mi – Large hill in the mix too

Tuesday December 26, 2017 – 

  • Skiing for 1.5 hours with my dad

Wednesday December 27, 2017 – 

  • 6 miles indoor cycling
  • 5.7 mi treadmill running 11:11min/mi

Thursday December 28, 2017 – 

  • 2000 yd swimming 2:13/100yd
  • 1.5 mi treadmill running 10:36 min/mi

Friday December 29, 2017

  • 4mi on home treadmill 11:44min/mi

Saturday December 30, 2017

  • 1 hour zumba class

Sunday December 31, 2017

  • 6 miles indoor cycling
  • 4.7mi treadmill running 10:35 min/mi
  • 1 hour bunny hill skiing
